Bill Walters, Board Member THE WINES Château de Valmer Vouvray Brut: This sparkling Vouvray is a great example of Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. With fresh apple, pear, and citrus aromas, it is fresh and bright while offering a nice complexity of flavors. Chardonnay, Cave de Lugny, Macon-Villages 2020: An elegant and crisp taste combining refreshing minerality and expressive fruits. Pair this medium-bodied wine with medium-bodied dishes. Mantel Blanco Sauvignon Blanc 2020: Fresh citrus fruits and green apple on the nose and palate; an herbal nuance builds with air. Taut and dry, showing good clarity, a late touch of fennel and firm cut on the nicely persistent finish. |
Grosjean Pinot Noir 2019: A very light Pinot, brimming with fruit compote, spruce stems, and rose petals. Its lithe nature and fragrance play nicely with a gentle minerality. Trefethen Cabernet Sauvignon 2018: Rich, deep red garnet color with aromas and flavors of black currant, ripe plum, and blackberry. Notes of lavender, cocoa, and leather are layered with black pepper and vanilla bean. Full-bodied and intense, this wine is balanced and well-structured with seamless acidity and firm tannins. This powerful wine is approachable and enjoyable now and will continue to evolve and show its personality over the next decade. |
DID YOU KNOW
There are three major types of wine: red, white, and rosé. However, there are different, less popular
varieties, including orange and even blue.
Red wine can only be made from blue or purple-skinned grapes. White wine can also come from these darker
grapes, but only if the juice is separated from the skins.
Rosé, which finds itself somewhere in between red and white, is most often crafted by allowing the juice limited
and controlled contact with dark grape skins.
Sweet or ‘dessert’ wine is made from grapes with high sugar content. In some parts of the world, this means
allowing grapes to contract a fungal infection called botrytis or ‘Noble Rot’, in others it means allowing grapes
to freeze over before they are picked to create syrupy ‘ice wine’.
Fortified wines (like sherry and port) are made by adding extra alcohol at different stages of the production
process.
The color of a wine is determined by the contact that the grape juice has with grape skins – this also impacts the
levels of tannins in the finished product.
The terroir of a wine is a combination of the environmental influences on the grapevine, including soil type and
climate.
